Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Canada stem cell drive

On April 2nd, One Match, through its affiliation with LLSC, will be on UBC’s campus to get people registered in the bone marrow & stem cell donor registry. We get people to swab their cheeks and fill out some paper work so that their genetic profile can be recorded (it takes 5 – 10 minutes). Once registered, a potential donor may be contacted to donate if someone in need of a bone marrow graft with a matching genetic profile is found (over 900 Canadians are currently looking for a match). Stem cells are usually taken from your blood (similar to donating blood normally). These stem cells will save the life of someone with a blood cancer (lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma), autoimmune disease, or bone marrow infection. On a personal note, my friend is alive today because she received a bone marrow transplant. She lives in Vancouver, the donator came from Portland, Oregon.

As explained in the note below, we really need young people with diverse backgrounds, which is why we are coming to the UBC Campus. If you feel comfortable joining the registry please see the details of the drive below. If you are interested in volunteering on April 2nd, please contact Warren Fingrut (wfingrut [at] gmail [dot] com).

Date: Monday, April 2nd
Location: UBC's SUB (across from "Blue Chip" cafe)
Time: 9am-6pm
Volunteers can sign up to volunteer via the google doc (www.tinyurl.com/swabubc). Training will be provided right at the start of a volunteer's shift as needed.
