Do you want to get involved with research? Do you have a research project in mind, but have difficulty approaching a professor? Come to the Professor Research Night to learn about the various research opportunities on campus. The event is a great chance to network with 14 esteemed researchers and professors from Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Physiology!

You will have the opportunity to learn the most up to date research projects on campus, and how to get involved.

Join the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Science

Are you interested in voicing student concerns about different courses and programs in the Faculty of Science? If so, then you are highly encouraged to join the Faculty of Science Curriculum Committee! We are looking for 1 student representative. Meetings are every Tuesday from 11-12:30PM until February 7th. SUS is hiring Spring Election 2012 volunteers

The Science Undergraduate Society of UBC is hiring its Spring Election Administration Committee. The committee is in charge of promoting, regulating, and organizing the SUS Spring Elections of 2011. This election is going to be through an online voting system. The following positions are available and are all non-paid volunteer work.

  • Elections Administrator: The chair of the elections committee, and spokes person of the election. The EA should oversee the work of the elections committee member and report to the Vice President Internal, and SUS council.
  • Elections Public Relations Officer: Promotes the elections via enhancing the communication between groups, clubs, departments, and the faculty.
  • Elections Secretary: oversees the voting progress and conducts reports on the voting and results.
  • Elections Social Coordinator: Organizes events for promoting the elections, and voting. The events may be before or during the voting period.
  • Elections Graphic Design and Web Directors: Design posters and promotional material for the elections, and update the website regularly.

Please note the hiring will be from Jan 30th until the end of elections March 16th. The time commitment is different for each position and depends on the agreements of the team. During the elections and a week before the committee has to be able to put +10hrs a week into their position.

The members of the elections committee are not able to run in the SUS Spring Elections of 2011, and are not able to endorse any of the candidate before and during the elections period.

Vacancies for Math and Geography Rep positions

SUS is looking to appoint students to the positions of Math Program Representative and Geography Program Representatives. SUS Sales Photo Contest 2012

How would you like your photo (hopefully with you and your friends in it) on the SUS website + getting an awesome SUS Merchandise prize package!!

This contest is a chance for you to show us and the rest of the world your science spirit in the form of a photograph. You do not need a fancy DSLR to get the best photo. All you need is your science spirit, any camera, and some creativity to get you that winning shot!

Rules:

  • Two entries per person (must be under 20MB/photo)
  • Content has to be appropriate (PG 13)
  • Must portray "Science Spirit" (Bonus points for using this year's SUS T-shirt which could be purchased at the bookstore).
  • UBC/SUS hold rights to publish the entry photos for promotional purposes.
  • BE CREATIVE!! =)

Submit your photos to "media [at] sus [dot] ubc [dot] ca" with the subject heading "SUS Photo Contest 2012". Please include your full name, student #, and phone number. Please also include the names/contact info of the people who appear in your photo. By entering the contest, you agree to give UBC/SUS rights to use your photos for promotional purposes and are responsible for any legal issues.

Contest Deadline: February 29th, 2012 at 11:59:30pm PST.

The entries will be "voted" by the public and "Judged" by our panel of Judges.

iKonnect 2012

When: Thursday, 26 January, 6–8pm
Where: Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre

iKonnect 2012 is an upcoming Health Care networking and charity fundraiser event. Organized by undergraduate students, iKonnect offers an opportunity for students interested in Health Care careers to communicate with various professionals, researchers and students in the health sector.

iKonnect

Attendees include:

Medical Doctors,
Dentists,
Nurses,
Pharmacists,
Physiotherapists,
MD students,
Dentistry students etc.

iKonnect 2012 will bring together 40 Health Care Professionals and approximately 160 undergraduate students. Throughout the event, professionals will be sharing personal experiences obtained throughout their careers in the Health Care field, the education process, and tips on admissions and interviewing.

In addition, all donations from student entry and the auctioning of exam preparatory courses will be given to Hope International Development Agency in full, a reputable charity that has worked with us in previous years. The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the Abdul Ladha Centre located at the heart of UBC campus. The night will start at 6:00 pm (arrive 10 minutes early for admission) and will run until 8:00 pm, and will primarily consist of mixing and mingling with students along with a few quick speeches by some of our sponsors. Students are free to interact with professionals and professional students and ask any questions they would like to have answered.

Succeeding at Medical and Dental School Interviews

On January 16th, SUS is proud to present a special opportunity for those of you applying to medical or dental school. Dr. Robert Astroff (of Astroff Consultants) will be giving a FREE seminar on Medical and Dental interview skills. We hope to see you there!

When: Monday, 16 January, 2012, 12:30–2pm
Where: Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre, upper floor

This complimentary seminar will be conducted by Dr. Robert Astroff, President of Astroff Consultants. More information on Robert and the company can be found by visiting www.astroffconsultants.com.

Dr. Robert Astroff will discuss strategies to respond to the difficult questions that medical school and dental school applicants encounter, including:

  • An overview of the interview process;
  • Planning responses to challenging questions;
  • Tips and common themes that come up in interviews; and
  • Types of questions you should consider asking during the interview.

Dr. Astroff will be discussing strategies for succeeding at Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), CDA Structured and Panel Interviews.

Following the seminar, Dr. Astroff will be available to answer individual questions.

SUS is Hiring a Public Relations Officer (PRO)

The Public Relations Officer is an executive position in SUS. The time commitment for this position will
be ~10 hours a week (variable) from the time of hire until Spring Executive Elections for SUS taking place
in March. The duties of the PRO include, but are not limited to:

  • Chairing the SUS Public Relations Committee
  • Sitting on the Executive Committee
  • Attending SUS council meetings
  • Coordinating all official SUS Communication including the Science Wide Email
  • Overseeing the Publications Manager, Webmaster and Social Media Coordinator

Project Genesis 2011-2012: HIV/AIDS related internships

Project Genesis provides internships for students interested in educating people in developing countries on the prevention and social-cultural aspects of HIV/AIDS. Interns will have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills working with governmental and NGO's abroad that focus on HIV/AIDS related issues.
