UAEM Talk — "Making medicine for people, not for profit"
at the Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre
On November 22nd, 2008, eight students were invited to "give the talk of their lives" at the first annual Terry talks conference at UBC. One of these was Mike Gretes, a grad student in Biochemistry, and a member of UAEM, who spoke passionately about the need to ensure that medicines developed at universities are made affordable and accessible to people who need them worldwide. Currently, the lack of access to already existing medicines (which typically affects people who are too poor to pay for them) means that over 10 million people needlessly die every year of treatable infections. (WHO, http://whqlibdoc.who.int/hq/2004/WHO_EDM_2004.4.pdf)
Mike has this vision of 'essential medicines messengers' spreading the word about access to medicines, in a similar way that Al Gore's 'climate change messengers' made presentations of An Inconvenient Truth to their home communities.

Keynote — "The Search for the Chimera" by James Randi
at Woodward 2
recommended donation: $2 students, $10 guests — to UNICEF
The Science Undergraduate Society is proud to present James Randi as our Science Week 2009 Keynote speaker. Mr. Randi is a world renowned skeptic of the paranormal and pseudo-scientific claims, who, amongst many other achievements helped debunk "spoon benders" and faith healers such as Uri Geller and Peter Popoff, who have deceived the public for their personal gain. Mr. Randi's tireless efforts to enforce rational scientific thinking over accepting the paranormal has been a thorn in the sides of those who try to deceive in the public in the name of the supernatural. For Science Week, Mr. Randi will be enlightening the audience by revealing and explaining the facts about "psychic spoon-bending," "speaking to the dead," and "mind-reading," to name a few. Click here for a full biography.
Please RESERVE and PRINT your ticket online at the following websites starting from Tuesday, January 20, 8:00am:
